The Knowsley Community Tradenet ("Tradenet") provided an e-commerce environment between local residents, the council and local businesses to provide a shopping and information service for the whole community. The first of its type in the country, enabling businesses and residents to access each other.

Tradenet existed to reduce the barriers to Information Technology in a community based environment.

Small Businesses were given the capacity to compete with larger organisations for local tenders. Access to Tradenet through the network of PCs in Libraries, Schools and resource centres is easily available and e-learning facilities and services will be made available on the Interactive Digital T.V system.

Knowsley Council, internet developers Connect Internet Solutions and Kirkby Unemployed Centre worked in partnership with Huyton Credit Union, Peapod UK Ltd, Blackburn and Darwen Borough Council and the North West eGovernment Group to develop the project.

The concept of a "Local Trading Consortia" to buy, sell, exchange goods and deliver services will see people working together for mutual benefit and will boost the local economy through more efficient local trading.
